10-10-10

happy 10-10-10!!

today, we met up with a friend whom i've known since kindergarten. we went to school together for most of our lives (missing only the 3rd grade and 3.5 years of college) and luckily reconnected a couple years ago. she had her first son a little over a week after i gave birth to buliilt. so it's even nicer to see our kids playing together!

since we both needed to get ready for halloween, we found a pumpkin patch somewhat halfway in between us, krop's crops. when we first drove up to it, e was a little hesitant, saying it looked really boring. to be fair, it did... all we could see was the storefront, a small selection of pumpkins and a bunch of flowers and pottery. once we parked and really looked around, we found a few things to keep the kids busy.

it took a while, but belly and bulilit warmed up to the farm animals in the back. belly was even feeding grass to the goats and the donkey (though she definitely favored the goats). this city girl was not excited to feed animals (but i did it anyway!). the girls also got a kick out of the bunny and the insane amount of chickens.

we were waiting around for the hay ride when we discovered the corn bin. oh. my. goodness. best invention ever. it's basically a ball pit with thousands of corn kernels. the kids jumped in and then convinced the adults to get in. we played in there for a long time (and had corn kernels falling out of various places the rest of the day!). we finally had our turn on the hay ride and the kids seemed to enjoy it. to top it all off, the weather was beautiful - sunny and warm! we'll definitely be going back next year!

after the hay ride, kids were starving so we stopped at a little pizza place nearby and had a really good lunch! it was adorable watching the kids run around the empty restaurant.

oh and interesting tidbit... on our way to krop's crops, we passed by gilbert arenas' house. all i have to say is DAMN.

daaammmnnnn

has it really been this long? we're into a new month? oops. because i have so much to catch up on, welcome to a stream of consiousness post...

ETA (@11:55pm): i'm updating the blog from bed and belly just rolled over to me and says, "mommy. whaaaatcha doin?" (silence) "oh that's fun" (silence) "what's that?" all with her eyes closed. so she sleepwalks AND talks in her sleep. fabulous.

fun things from labor day weekend:

monday: lunch at jason's deli with my hungry girls, scarfing down their mac n cheese... enjoying the last day at the pool (for 30 minutes)... yummy chinese buffet at blue pearl in springfield...

sunday: clemyjontri park... girls entertaining each other in the car on the way over... girls' laughs=best sound ever... dinner at ruby tuesdays with my hungry girls who dance in the aisles, smile at the wait staff and other diners... bulilit waving bye to everyone when we leave

saturday: shopping at dulles town center... buying girls' new shoes... watching the carousel then giving in when belly asks me non-stop if she can ride... sitting on the too-fast carousel with bulilit and belly... ice cream and cookies for dessert, after the girls inhale a pizza

friday, 9/3: lunch with my hs bestie at noodles & co, catching up, making plans to work/study together now that i have a new nanny situation

wednesday, 9/1: hanging out with kim (ha! it's been forever since we used that nickname!!! and her sister was lea, as in lea salonga, and she was kim because that was lea's name in miss saigon), coming downstairs to the basement to see her and e, with buililt in e's arms, computers back to back battleship style. hilarious.

tuesday, 8/31: smarie and her mom over at the house to color my hair, gossip and catch up. i heart them ...

entire week of 8/30 - 9/3: feeling like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders as punky comes back to watch the kids. e coming home from work saying he likes seeing me happy and that i have so much less apparent stress already. and really appreciating my afternoons with both the kids and my husband when i've been away from them all day.

saturday, 8/27: yo gabba gabba live at nissan pavillion. (whatever, jiffy lube live. you will always be nissan pavillion)... running into a hs friend whose daughter is also super into YGG.

for those of you unfamiliar, allow me to introduce them:

pssst, i'd read down a few blog entries. didn't realize i had more than a few in draft mode so i just published them! :)

fun times in charm city

today we went to the baltimore aquarium with all the kids. the mommies had been talking about it for a little bit and we decided the kids were old enough to appreciate it. so bright and early saturday morning, we packed up belly and bulilit to head to bmore and meet up with ballerina and her family as well as bear and his mommy.

all week, belly was excited about seeing the dolphins. practically the minute we walked in, she was chanting, 'dolphins, i want to see dolphins!' it was fun, though ... we got to see almost everything -- turtles, sting rays, sharks, puffins, jellyfish and yes, the dolphins. it was adorable seeing all 6 kids oohing and ahhing over things.

after we got back to my parents' house, the girls and i played rock band on the wii and then played outside. it was so nice sitting on the porch in the warm afternoon sun, feeling the slight breeze on my skin.

good day.

i know, i know...

ahh, blog, how i've neglected you. as a lifelong procrastinator, i have many excuses prepared ...

My reasons for not updating in almost 3 weeks:
-post miami funk
-prepping for e's trip to vegas
-absolute insanity at work
-belly's 3rd birthday
-continued insanity at work

so you see i haven't been purposely ignoring my blog! i always want to write a little something after belly and bulilit go to bed, but there's a kitchen to be cleaned, work to be done, showers to be had... it's quite frustrating really.

but through these past 18 days, i have many, many things to be thankful for... an unbelievable bachelorette party for my sis2be in miami, a husband who loves his wife and kids, fun family times and most of all, my eldest child's THIRD birthday.

ANYWAYS ... this is just a quick post to explain my absence. in the meantime, just to jazz it up, i've switched the design of the blog (this just seems more cheery!) to celebrate the first day of summer. rest assured, i have a few draft posts i just need to polish and then there will be a flurry of postings in the next few days. promise!

Monday, June 7

welcome to miami

a photo blog of the fun-slash-crazy time we had in miami to celebrate sis2be's bachelorette party!

relaxing on south beach saturday afternoon.

our sweet ride to the club saturday night. SWOOP!!

SHOTS!SHOTS!SHOTS!SHOTS!SHOTS!SHOTS!SHOTS! (i think these were woo woos, though it seemed like the shot of the weekend was patron. mmm.)

see the pink and black bracelets? yup, sis2be is in the middle of that mess!

the trip was ~heavenly~ and we all had a blast - good food, good music, good company. YAY girls weekend!

p.s. you know it was a good weekend when i was still drunk on the plane coming home on sunday!

MIA

i love things with multiple meanings... i will be m.i.a for a few days while i'm in MIA. haha. (i'm such a dork.)

A few days of sun, dancing, good food and drink, all with girls i adore? YES.

see you in a few!

Sunday

Went to church in the morning and watched the kids play happily in the nursery/playroom. It was packed - bulilit was her usual social self while belly preferred playing by herself. i really need to get this girl into daycare or preschool.

Today was also the official start to the summer grill season! E broke out the grill my parents gave him for christmas and cooked up short ribs, steaks and portobello mushrooms. I put together a quick potato salad and baked my favorite chocolate chip cookies (recipes below).

After our late lunch, we put the girls in their swimsuits and slathered on the sunscreen. They have been graced with their father's genes, meaning they tan beautifully, while I burn, then tan. It also means that I will always be the whitest person in the family.

We had fun at the pool, with belly jumping in and learning to use a kickboard, and bulilit getting out of the 2' deep kiddie pool, olympic swimmer style, just to get back in. When we got home, E grilled hot dogs for dinner and we topped off the day with ice cream! Great start to summer!

Old-Fashioned Potato Salad (adapted from Betty Crocker)
3 medium potatoes, peeled
1/2 cup mayonnaise
3 tsp white vinegar
3 tsp spicy brown mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
dash of pepper
1/2 small onion, chopped
1 small celery stalk, chopped
3 hard-cooked eggs, chopped

Place potatoes in enough water to cover and boil. Cook 20 to 25 minutes or until tender; drain. Cool.

Mix mayonnaise, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper in large bowl. Add potatoes, celery and onion; toss. Stir in eggs. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours until chilled.

Darrell's "Forget-the-Cookies-just-give-me-the-Batter" Chocolate Chip Cookies (adapted from Kids Cooking: A Very Slightly Messy Manual)

1 stick of butter, softened
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. white sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 egg
1 1/8 c. flour
¼ tsp. salt
½ tsp. baking soda
1 bag (6 oz.) chocolate chips

Cream together the softened butter and both sugars. (Butter needs to be very soft. I recommend leaving it out for at least 12-18 hours.) Add the egg and mix well, then add the vanilla. Stir.

In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking soda and salt. Add into wet mixture in portions, incorporating well between portions. Add chocolate chips.

Stir everything until it's all mixed up well and put the bowl in the refrigerator to cool for at least an hour. (I usually cool overnight.)

When ready to bake, line cookie sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough into walnut-sized balls, put them on the cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes.

DON'T OVERCOOK! You want your cookies to be moist and chewy.

Take them off the cookie sheet carefully with your spatula and let them cool.

welcome to the fam, sis2be

sis2be's bridal shower day! thankfully, the rain let up (just as i was about to unload my car, which was packed to the gills with bridal shower things!) and we got to enjoy a beautiful day outside. the winery was beyond beautiful and i think everyone had a really good time. (at least, i hope so!)

less than 2 months until the wedding!!

i don't like change

so had to do a target run yesterday and thought i'd be in and out in 20 minutes. silly girl, you *never get out of target in 20 minutes! i had a list of items i needed to get both for the house and for the shower i'm hosting this weekend for my sis2be. (this is the part where i admit my anal-retentiveness / OCD.) so my list is organized by store sections, in the order of how i plan to get them (i like to go in, turn right and then make my way around the store). i walk into target, wondering at the "we're open during our remodel" sign that i noticed outside. i make it all the way to the far right of the store to pick up diapers and - no. no diapers there now. so i think, hmm, ok, let me grab some seasonal stuff and head up the aisle to find ... not what i'm looking for. ANYWAYS, to make a long story short, it took me 40 minutes running around from one end of the store to another to get all the things i needed. thank goodness for my mom, who met us there and kept belly occupied in the toy section.

today, the kids played outside for a good part of the afternoon because it's finally nice again. i felt all 1950s-ish because e was mowing the lawn while i had the kids playing in the playground, with a bunch of the neighborhood kids out too. on our way in, i stopped to talk to our neighbor. just add the white picket fence and i'm a cliche. but i secretly love it.

blog fail.

Monday, May 10
Wow. Has it really been a week? Oops. I don't think the frequency will get any better -- in fact, it will likely become worse as summer really kicks off and we have a truckload of different events coming up (you should see our family google calendar).

Anyways... thankful today for drama-free bath time, e coming home early. Also, you know I can never resist sharing a baby story ... tonight, after reading books, belly asks me, 'what do you want for your birthday?' and then when i said all i wanted was a big kiss from her and her sister, she said, 'how about i get you a dora toy?'

Sunday, May 9
Happy Mother's Day!!! Still at the beach, windy and cold today so no sitting on the sand before we leave. Of course, I'm thankful for my mama. Duh. And for waking up to my husband and daughter handing me a card and giving me a kiss. (As I get kicked in the back/ribs/face by younger daughter who takes up the entire bed. Her way of telling me she loves me!)

Saturday, May 8
Drove up to the beach last night to spend the weekend in the sun, sand and surf. Kids woke up early, per usual, and we headed out at 9am. The sun was warm, the water was freezing. But that didn't deter bulilit from walking as fast as her little legs could take her right into said freezing water. belly seemed much more happy sitting (ahem, squatting, ahem) in the sand, building sand castles.

Thankful for my parents taking the kids while we were at the outlets, so that e and i could walk around together in a vain attempt for him to buy me a birthday present. mission=fail. i seem to enjoy buying things for the kids moreso than for myself. (Can you blame me? How much cuter are little girl clothes than clothes in sizes I don't want to admit I wear?!)

Friday, May 7
On the way to ballet this morning, this is what I heard.
Conversations between 2 years olds, part 1
Ballerina (b2): What's that, Belly?
Belly (b1): A book.
b2: where'd you get it?
b1: from ami. from ami's house. i will get you one too.
b2: no, you're a silly bird.

Conversations between 2 years olds, part 2
b2: hey! belly has sunglasses! i don't have sunglasses.
me: maybe you can ask your mommy to get you some for your birthday.
b1: i will get you sunglasses, ballerina.

Conversations between 2 years olds, part 3
me: belly, share your snack with ballerina
b1: here, ballerina.
b2: thanks, belly.
b1: sure.
b2: belly, can i have some more?
b1: sure. (hands ballerina the cup of froot loops.) can i have it back please?
(Quiet, chewing)
b1: oh no! there are no more blues!!
b2: i see one!
b1: where?
b2: there!
b1: where?!
b2: there!!
b1: where? i don't see it!
b2: on the side? THERE!
b1: oh.

Thursday, May 6
Yay! Laptop is fixed!

Today, I was thankful for dinner at red robin - courtesy of my parents who are back from vacation - and the start of all the free food that comes along with my birthday and being part of a million mailing lists. looking forward to maggie moos next!

Wednesday, May 5
Happy cinco de mayo! too bad i don't celebrate. I'm writing this post like 5 days later so...
Thankful for a short nap and sunshine. Not thankful for the virus that I somehow got on my laptop.

peace and quiet. there.

heart my family

thursday, april 29
i know it's a repeat, but so thankful for e when it comes to bathtime. it's funny trying to squeeze 4 people into the bathroom but bathtime is one of my favorite things to do as a family. weird? yeah. but it's totally us.

wednesday, april 28
i stumbled upon this blog, and it both validated my feelings and scared the living daylights out of me. e and i joke that belly is 2 going on 12, but seriously, she acts old for her age. and many of the, shall we say, qualities, of a three year old talked about in this blog post sound eerily similar to how belly behaves. a lot of the time. she will be three in about 2 months, so maybe this is par for the course? and maybe since she's starting hers so early, the craziness of the three year old will go away before her fourth birthday? one can only hope.

anyway, here are some of my favorite excerpts, in case you haven't clicked over to the blog.

Tina Fey was on David Letterman recently. When he asked about her four-and-a-half-year-old
daughter, Tina talked about how much fun it was to have a child that age: they say funny things, they ask good questions... but also, "they stop being little three-year-old jerks."

Our firstborn, she is smart and funny and sweet and kind and all the wonderful things we'd hoped to have in a child. But, holy hell, she is also three.

I try hard not to rely on the Disney Channel and Nick Jr., but after pounds of Cheerios and Goldfish crackers are flung on the floors, and the cats are wearing sparkly headbands, and the baby is covered in My Little Pony stickers, and every pot and pan in the kitchen has been moved to the bathroom "so the cats have somewhere to sleep" (sometimes, it's just easier not to ask questions), it's either I cower under the dining room table and try to be invisible, or I flip on the television, albeit to the wrong show on the wrong channel. Because when you're the mother of
a three-year-old, there's very little you can do right, and there's endless commentary on just how wrong you got it.

maybe only other parents will get this, but so thankful i'm not the only one out there feeling completely at a loss when it comes to my (almost) three year old.

tuesday, april 27
why can i never leave target without dropping serious cash? i should be banned, for the health of my wallet. this trip netted 3 packs of diapers (because if you bought 2, you got a $5 gift card. and who can resist something free?); baby detergent; adult detergent; toilet paper; cereal; lotion; and beach pail set. let's forget about the trip i made to target just last week, which came up to about the same amount for a bunch of stuff that i can't even remember now. oops.

earlier in the evening, i took belly and bulilit out to play while we waited for their daddy to get home from work. while the kids played happily in the mulch, i sat on the swing and remembered how fun it really is.

Monday, April 19

distracted

typing this up as i watch my new moon blu ray for the first time since i bought it. haha...

today began pretty crappy, but definitely turned into a very good day. belly played by herself, drawing pictures and reading books to herself, out loud. then she shows me the pictures and she's drawn legit happy faces. one of them even had little stick arms and stick legs and she proudly told me, 'this is bulilit!' ah-dor-able.

i took the kids to the playground after nanny left, and bulilit did her usual circuit of climbing up the stairs, inching her way backwards toward the slide and then sliding down the curvy slide on her belly, feet first. she did it literally 10 times. again, ah-dor-able.

because it was so nice outside, we decided to have a picnic dinner. so as soon as e got home, we pulled out the picnic basket, wrapped up all the food, grabbed a blanket and laid it out in the sunshine. it was awesome. belly ate an entire piece of fried chicken by herself -- and bulilit must've been jealous because she too grabbed a chicken leg and was chomping on it. one of the best evenings i've had in a while.

sunday, april 18
  • good deals at old navy and children's place
  • words with friends on my ipod touch

saturday, april 17
  • breakfast at bk. those burger shots are just the right size for the kids. too bad it's so not healthy.
  • car wash for my mommy car. finally seeing the sleek silver instead of the sticky, yellow-green pollen.
  • spa week - got a facial for the first time in 3 years and my skin feels all baby soft

ok, back to new moon!

Monday, April 12

groundhog day

yes, i realize it's april 12 and not february 2. but lately, it's felt like every day is just a repeat of the last. i joked once with my cousin that my life wasn't very exciting -- rather mundane and routine actually -- and said my motto was "lather, rinse, repeat." oh, how i'm longing for the days of normalcy and uneventfulness.

To recap the last week and half, i've made 3 trips to the doctor for 2 different kids within the span of 1 week. let's not forget that because i'm so attached to the pediatric practice i grew up with, i decided to bring my kids there, despite the fact it is 16 miles away and 25 minutes on a good day (and let's be serious, when does going east along 66 ever go as fast as it should??).

but belly and bulilit do make it interesting so i gotta give credit where it's due. the two of them will vacillate between making each other laugh hysterically by blowing raspberries to yelling at each other ("mommy, bulilit just pinched me!" "Agh!" "mommy, bulilit won't hold my hand!" "Agh!" "mommy, bulilit is spilling her juice on her car seat!" "Agh! Agh! Agh!")

The last trip to the doctor, on Friday, yielded this conversation on the way home:

Belly: Mommy, I'm hungry for dinner. (Right, because it's now 6:30 and in the rush to get to the dr's office, mommy didn't pack any snacks for the car even though it was prime dinner time.)

Me: I know you are Belly. I'm trying to get home as soon as possible but there are all these cars on the road. (You guessed right, I was on 66 West, battling it out with the regular commuters.)

Belly: But I'm hungry now.

Me: Yes, and as soon as we get home, I'll make you some chicken and rice (note: we had chicken and rice for lunch since it was freshly cooked at that point and I had made enough to last for dinner as well.)
Belly: Chicken and rice AGAIN? (yes, you are are your father's daughter. have i mentioned that i'm probably the only one in the house who eats leftovers?)
When we get home, I fix up two bowls of chicken and rice. Bulilit comes at me with her mouth open wide, like I can't shovel the food in her mouth fast enough (compare to the previous night, trying to feed her wild rice and her mouth stays clamped shut while the head shakes furiously).

Belly, after eating about 3/4 of her bowl tells me she's done. So I say, ok, how about one more big bite? And she says, no, how about 4 more? I think I like negotiating with toddlers!

Anyway, what a long-winded intro into my thankful list. Thanks for sticking with me (if you've made it this far!):

Friday: Isn't it obvious? Conversations with toddlers and interactions among sisters. Oh also, spring session for ballet has started and the girls got to dress up as fairy princesses this week.

Saturday: After putting the girls to bed, E and I went to Fridays and I had a real drink (wine and sangria don't count). Too bad I'm alcohol illiterate and didn't realize what I ordered until it arrived to the table. What can I say, I saw "tropical mojito" and even if it came in a pitcher I still would've ordered it. But really, I was thankful for alone time (finally!) with my husband, laughing and being stupid and remembering what it was like to be out on a saturday night!

Sunday: Spending time with my sis2be, who flew in the previous night. (Yes, cheesy!) And naps. Lots of them while cuddling with a sick baby.

Monday: A beautiful spring day and Orange Milano cookies with milk.

Wednesday, March 31

my house smells like tocino

cooked brinner tonight (a/k/a breakfast for dinner). tocino, eggs and rice. tocilog, without the sinaangag. (sp?) and smelling the house makes me nostalgic and reminds me of growing up. it's funny how certain smells remind you of different times of your life (like how cool water and hugo boss will forever remind me of senior year high school and fresh cut grass reminds me of grade school, in the spring, when we'd have to shut the windows at the first sniff of cut grass due to one classmate's debilitating allergies. random, huh?).

didn't get to post last night because i was smack in the middle of two kids, passed out on our bed. e went to a hockey game with coworkers so i had to attempt to put both girls down for bed. luckily, it went easier than i expected (e feared he'd come home at 11 to all 3 of us, still awake). thank goodness for fios on demand and for 'hush little baby' for helping get the girls to sleep.

between when they fell asleep and when e got home, i caught up on some tv, including dancing with the stars, general hospital and last week's vampire diaries. oh. em. gee. for reals. so many bombs dropped and tiny secrets revealed here and there... seriously, my guilty pleasure that is SO GOOD.

anyways, we didn't have the heart to move them once they were passed out, so all 4 of us slept in the bed and, after bulilit's usual midnight waking, all of us slept through the night! girls didn't wake each other or us up until 7:30.

today, i'm thankful for the 30 minutes of peace and quiet i had (plus 15 min driving each way). happy almost easter!

Thursday, March 25

sitting in the sunshine, feeling the breeze

i love spring (well, except for the allergies!). i'm sitting in my backyard, computer on my lap, working away. while last week was sunny and warm, it was cold and rainy the past couple days. so now that the sun is back out i am basking in it.

i am thankful for bulilit's wide-eyed innocence and wonder at the littlest things. while we were sitting on the playground, she was sitting on the edge, completely entranced by the wood chips, picking them up and running them through her fingers. makes me wistful, as i sit here with what feels like the weight of the world on my shoulders.

yesterday, i was thankful for where we live, because the community playground is literally in our backyard. so we were out there for awhile, and didn't have to come in until almost 7pm because it didn't require a long trek back the house. (and yay for belly and bulilit's playground friends!!)

eta, also thankful for e. pretty much every day but especially on 3/24. he knows why.

Saturday, March 20

thankful for eggs, sun and cupcakes

i am such a twi-mom. ugh, i hate that term and i'll deny it to the high heavens but it's true. the new moon dvd came out today and while i wasn't at a midnight party to purchase it, i did come across this clip from eclipse that was included on the dvd:

though new moon apparently doesn't have the audio commentary that made the twilight dvd so enjoyable, i think i need to pay target a visit and make a purchase tomorrow. :)

anyways, got sidetracked there. this morning, we took belly and bulilit to my grad school alma mater (go hoyas! though you did NOT show up on thursday and proceeded to ruin my bracket) for an easter egg hunt (yes, i realize we are still in the lenten season and easter is not for another two weeks. tell that to the alumni organizing committee). the hunt couldn't have come on a better day -- sunny, warm and gorgeous! of course, belly was terrified of the easter bunny while bulilit looked curious (but honestly, who isn't scared of something that looks like this: http://collegecandy.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/easter-bunny-picture.jpg?????)

during the actual hunt, bulilit was fascinated by the one egg she picked up while daddy had to encourage belly to actually walk around and pick up eggs. all in all, fun was had by all and i thought the gtown alumni assoc did a good job.

after the hunt, we ventured down prospect street to finally try georgetown cupcake. honestly, i didn't have high hopes because cakelove disappointed me so much, but oh-emm-gee. seriously, so good. the frosting on the vanilla squared that i had was a tad on the sweet side but the cake was absolute perfection. we brought home half a dozen; my dad had a coconut cupcake while e had chocolate ganache and both said they were really good. i think georgetown cupcake will need to be a mandatory stop anytime we find ourselves in georgetown. (pictures coming soon!)

Tuesday, March 16

whoa! a post??

well look at that, i managed no lag time between posts! woo hoo!!

it's been a long day... and feeling like it may be a long night (no real reason it will be, but i just have a *feeling*) but i am so thankful the rain finally stopped and we had SUN today! it felt so good to sit in the warm sunlight bathing my dining room, with my bare feet being warmed by the floor which had been sitting in sunlight for the better part of 3 hours.

what's even better? it's supposed to be warm and sunny the rest of the week!!
